CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy - Holistic Therapy Dublin

CranioSacral Therapy  is an complementary therapy used worldwide by many physiotherapists, osteopaths, massage therapists to improve health and restore vitality.

CranioSacral Therapy was developed in 1899 by William Garner Sutherland, an American physician and osteopath.

Clients sometimes refer to Craniosacral therapy as Cranial Massage, Cranial Sacral Massage, or SacroCranial therapy.

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

CranioSacral therapy is a gentle, non-invasive but powerful hands-on therapy that benefits the whole body.

It helps to release tensions deep within the body lowering stress levels, improving sleep, inducing  relaxation, resulting in greater wellbeing.

This will stimulate the body to promote its own natural healing capabilities improving overall health and resistance to disease.

The CranioSacral system consists of the dural membranes the cerebrospinal fluid which surrounds , nourishes , hydrates and protects the brain and spinal cord. It extends from the bones of the skull, face and mouth, which make up the cranium, down to the sacrum, or tail bone area.

This is the central nervous system. The restrictions in cerebrospinal fluid flow in this area, sometimes stemming from traumatic birth, can cause sensory, motor and/or neurological disabilities.

How Craniosacral Therapy Works?

Craniosacral therapy aims to free restrictions in the natural movement of the cerebrospinal fluid, the clear liquid that cushions the brain and the spine.

Since this vital system influences the development and performance of the brain and spinal cord, the treatment can naturally reduce pain and stress, strengthen body natural resistance and allow it to heal itself.

CranioSacral Therapy in Newborn Infants

During the birth process, one of the greatest miracles of life, the baby’s head moulds to fit through the mother’s pelvis. During the birth it is normal for the cranial bones to override each other because of pressure and compression.

After birth, these overrides and other accommodations in the baby’s skull should not persist. If they do not correct themselves, they can interfere with proper cranial nerve function leading to colic, breathing, swallowing, digestive or sensory-motor impairments for example. Sometimes babies are injured inthe birth process. The injuries may be both physical and emotional.

Because the treatment is so gentle, CranioSacral Therapy can be effective for all ages, from infants to elders. Read this article about Craniosacral Therapy and its use for children.

What can I expect from a CranioSacral Therapy session?

A typical CranioSacral Therapy session takes place in a quiet, private setting. You remain fully clothed as you relax on a comfortable, treatment table. Your therapist begins by gently touching usually the feet to evaluate the rhythm of the fluid that is flowing around your central nervous system.

By carefully listening with the hands to locate areas of reduced fluid flow or restricted tissue motion, your practitioner can trace through the body to the origin of these.

Delicate, precise and effective manual techniques are then used to release body tissues in these problem areas and improve the function of your central nervous system. While many techniques are carried out from the cranium and / or sacrum, your practitioner may also work on other parts of the body when that is relevant for you.

A session can last up to an hour or more. It can be used alone or integrated with other therapies to create powerful effects. What you experience from a session is highly individual and can be different each time, but may often create feelings of warmth, softening or pulsing in the areas the therapist is working on and generally, the treatment is deeply relaxing.
