CranioSacral Therapy for babies and children

CranioSacral Therapy and its use for children

If your baby seems unsettled and stressed – try CranioSacral Therapy for Babies. You may be astonished by the results.

Research shows that the birth process can can be very stressful for a baby and have potential long term effects on a child.

During the birth process, one of the greatest miracles of life, the baby’s head moulds to fit through the mother’s pelvis.

During the birth it is normal for the cranial bones to override each other because of pressure and compression.

After birth, these overrides and other accommodations in the baby’s skull should not persist. If they do not correct themselves, they can interfere with proper cranial nerve function leading to colic, breathing, swallowing, digestive or sensory-motor impairments for example.

Sometimes babies are injured in the birth process. The injuries may be both physical and emotional.

CranioSacral Therapy carried out early in life could potentially reduce the impact this stress may have,  some of it might not become apparent until your child is in school.

When properly applied, CranioSacral Therapy for Babies is essentially risk-free and may bring great benefits for babies and older children alike.

What is CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy is gentle manual therapy that addresses restrictions in the craniosacral system – the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

Since the craniosacral system directly impacts the central nervous system, we find that imbalances or tensions in this area can cause any number of sensory, motor or neurological disabilities.

CranioSacral Therapy helps correct these imbalances and restricted fluid flow so the body can more easily release the effects of stress.

Benefits of CranioSacral Therapy for Infants

Because of its positive effect on so many body functions and its gentle, well-intentioned touch, CranioSacral Therapy is often recommended for infants and older babies.

Whether as a treatment in its own right or as an adjunct to other approaches, CranioSacral Therapy can assist babies and older children with a wide variety of challenges.

Many parents report that  their newborns and young children are more settled after the sessions; they sleep better, they eat better, they appear more calm and relaxed. Many times the therapy helps new mums to relax as well!

The precise, although gentle touch of the therapist hands, help the craniosacral and the central nervous system release tension and stress that has built up in the body and help it return to its natural rhythm.  No matter how old your child is, it can benefit from this gentle, yet powerful therapy.

What can I expect from a CranioSacral Therapy session?

Since CranioSacral Therapy is not prescriptive in its approach, we work by listening to and following what it feels the body tissues need to do, whatever condition your baby may be experiencing.

Working with babies may bring a degree of unpredictability! Our prime intention is for the child to be comfortable with the therapist and with receiving a treatment. Sometimes this means that in the first session or two it may be important for the child to acclimatize to the setting and practitioner before hands-on treatment can start.

CranioSacral Therapy is usually performed on a fully clothed body and the practitioner is feeling for and monitoring the rhythm of the craniosacral system.

By this careful ‘listening’ they can evaluate and then work with areas of restriction, tension or reduced movement in the body tissues. The techniques we use are delicate, precise and effective in improving the function of the craniosacral system, thus affecting the nervous system and all that it connects to.

While many techniques are carried out from the cranium or sacrum – head and lower back – practitioners may work on other parts of the body too.

Children generally respond very quickly to the work as their systems still retain a lot of flexibility. Sessions may therefore last between 15 minutes and an hour depending on the age of the child, their co-operation and the needs of their body.

CranioSacral Therapy is not a replacement for appropriate medical care and if there are any concerns we recommend consulting your medical practitioner.
